Reasons for Garage Door Damage

The fact that most people take their garage doors for granted is a testament to the efficiency of their design. The simplest jobs can often involve complex machinery, and the garage door is no exception. Because of this, there are a lot of ways that a garage door can fail.

Here, we explore the most common reasons for garage door damage:

  1. Broken springs – the garage door tension springs, as the name suggests, are under constant stress. Whether it’s from continual use or a flaw in the manufacturing process, these springs can and will break over time.

  2. Broken lifting cables – although robust in their design, the cables that help open and close your garage doors will still deteriorate. When one of the wound wires that compose the cable frays, expect the rest to follow suit.

  3. Misaligned or blocked photo-eye – garage doors have sensors on both sides that detect the presence of things that go under them. Located a few inches off the floor, they give out an invisible beam that stops the door from closing if something breaks the connection. If it’s blocked by dirt or misaligned, your garage door won’t close properly.

  4. Electrical damage – garage doors, as with most mechanical devices, operate on electricity. If your garage suffers from wiring problems, either through age or weather damage, it not only causes malfunctions, it may be a potential fire hazard.

  5. Coming off the tracks – the rollers on a garage door go along a track to open and close smoothly. When these tracks are misaligned or suffer from a blockage, the rollers can leave the rails and cause the garage door to cease functioning.

  6. Clutter – for a lot of people, garages serve a dual purpose of being storage areas. Often, this clutter can contribute to the damage that your garage doors can suffer. Items may block the sensors, jam into the tracks, or get stuck under the doors as they’re closing. Clutter is an easily avoidable, but often common source of garage door damage.

  7. Normal wear and tear – even the most expensive garage doors can’t escape the deterioration brought about from constant use over time. They will eventually break down. The trick is to continually maintain them to prolong their useful life.

WHAT TO DO WHEN GARAGE DOORS BREAK DOWN

Unless what’s wrong is something you can move away or wipe off, calling a professional is the best way to fix a broken garage door. They contain a lot of parts that can cause serious injury if not handled correctly. Unless you know what you are doing, please leave it to the experts.
