There’s hardly anything more frustrating than trying to open the garage door in the morning only to find that it’s jammed. If you are often unable to open your garage door, there is a good chance that the door alignment is off. Learn all there is to know about it.
Maybe the hardware has loosened up over time, or someone bumped into the garage. Whatever the reason, many signs indicate a misaligned door:
Door rubbing against the stop molding
Binding door that’s difficult to open or close
Gap between the door and the stop molding
Crooked door
Out of balance door
These are signs that the door tracks need to be realigned. If left unattended, the door may cause a lot of trouble. If the door is off-balance, the door may fall and injure someone. Burglars will have an easier time entering through a door that doesn’t close fully. A jammed door can stop you from getting the car out in an emergency. This is not a comprehensive list of all the problems a poorly aligned garage door might cause; it’s better to address the issue right away.
Aligning the garage door can usually be done by the homeowner. Check out the possible types of issues and their fixes.
A crooked door that seems out of balance should be inspected – specifically, the springs and cables. These are key components, so make sure all cables are in good order. If not, it may be wise to replace them as soon as possible. If it’s too complicated, contact a professional garage door company.
When this happens, it’s almost impossible to move the door up or down. There are four ways to deal with this:
Loosen the screws on the tracks with a screwdriver
Adjust the track by tapping its bottom with a rubber mallet and make sure that it’s straight by leveling it
Tighten the track screws so that the track doesn’t move
Adjust the other track by repeating the previous two steps
A garage door that leaves a gap or rubs on something is annoying, to say the least. Here’s how you may be able to fix it:
Use a wrench to loosen the bolts on the lower track
Adjust the gap by moving the tracks to the left or right until you get a gap that’s no more than a quarter of an inch.
Tighten the track bolts
Garage door problems may not be user-resolvable. To avoid injury and further damage, it’s better to leave it to the pros. They’ll be able to locate the problem or fix it, whatever it takes.
